On February 7, 25 years ago, a man with a broken jaw and pain in is shoulders took on himself to break the back of Pakistan’s batting and help India win the Test match by 212 runs.
India’s legendary spinner, Anil Kumble posted a special video, taking a trip down the memory lane on the 25th anniversary of his historic 10/74 against Pakistan in 1999. He became the 1st Indian and only the 2nd bowler after Jim Laker to claim all the 10 wickets in a single innings. After Kumble, New Zealand’s Ajaz Patel joined the elite list with his 10-wicket haul against India in December 2021.
In the video, Kumble looked back at his time in the field as he called it a magical day. Kumble expressed his gratitude for the love and support that he received. He recalled how the Pakistan openers had struck a 100 plus opening partnership and the Indian spinners had to take India home in Delhi.
“25 years since this magical day! Time truly flies, but the memories as vivid as ever. Grateful for the love and support!” Kumble wrote on ‘X’.
“Pakistan were cruising at 100 for no loss, so it was all up to the spinners, the bowlers to do the job,” Kumble said in the video.
Pakistan were already leading in the 2-match Test series after winning the Chennai Test match. While chasing 420 runs in the 4th innings, the visitors got off to a flying start as the Pakistan openers shared a 101 stand. It looked like a potential draw, but Kumble had other plans as in no time Pakistan were reduced to 128 for 6. Pakistan showed a bit of resistance with a 58-run stand between Saleem Malik and Wasim Akram.
Kumble made India come back into the game by reducing Pakistan to 198 for 9. Kumble etched his name in the record books by dismissing Akram. Kumble finished off with a dreamy match figures of 10/74 in 26.3 overs. India won the match by 212 and levelled the series 1-1. Kumble finished off his illustrious career with 619 and emerged as India’s highest wicket-taker and 4th overall.
