Mitchell Starc had to wait until his 3rd match in IPL 2024 to open his account with the ball. After returning to the Indian Premier League with a Rs 24.75 corer contract. Starc did not have the best of starts as his price tag was questioned and pressure was piled up on the big Australian pacer. However, the left-arm fast bowler came into his own in style in Kolkata’s away game against Delhi in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday, April 3.

Mitchell Starc got his Australian teammates Mitchell Marsh and David Warner in his first two overs in the powerplay, showing signs of return to his vintage form. Starc was able to get the ball to swing for the first time as he was deprived of movement in Kolkata and Bengaluru in his first two IPL 2024 games. Starc had given away 47 runs in Bengaluru against RCB and 53 against SRH in their season opener in Kolkata.

Starc bowled a full delivery to entire Mitchell Marsh into hitting one straight to the point fielder in his second over, sending his Australian teammate walking back for 0. He then hurt Delhi’s chances of even getting close to their Himalayan target of 273 by knocking off David Warner in his 3rd over for 18 off 11 balls.

Delhi slipped to 51 for 4 as Mitchell Starc found an able new-ball bowling partner in Vaibhav Arora, who was brought in as Impact Player by the Knight Riders. Kolkata’s decision to give Starc an extra over in the powerplay worked wonders as he picked up the big wicket of David Warner.

Starc, who picked up 34 wickets over two seasons for RCB in 2014 and 2015, had missed IPL action since due to injuries and workload management. However, he entered the auction and became the costliest player in the history, fetching Rs 24.75 corer from the Knight Riders.

Notably, bowling coach Bharat Arun had said on the eve of their game against Delhi in Vizag that Starc would find his rhythm sooner, rather than later after two horror outings, shedding light on the conversations he had with the Australian fast bowler.

“He is probably one of the most experienced bowlers in the world and also somebody who understands the conditions and adapts to it very well. I think you will a see a different version of him in the future game,” Bharat said.

Earlier on Wednesday, Sunil Narine’s 39-ball 85 and 18-year-old Angrish Raghuvanshi’s 27-ball 54 coupled with Andre Russell and Rinku Singh’s late cameos helped KKR post 272, the second-highest team total in the history of the IPL.
