Paul Merson has claimed that Chelsea will have no chance of beating Aston Villa in their fourth-round replay on February 7.
The current season has been dismal for the West London Blues, with the team 11th in the Premier League table and looking highly unlikely to qualify for a European spot next season. After back to back losses against Liverpool and Wolves, Chelsea will be looking to get back to winning ways with their FA Cup match against Aston Villa.
With their poor run of form, the pressure has been piling up on Pochettino, whose role as the club’s manager looks increasingly poised to follow the same fate as that of his predecessors, Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter. Both fans and pundits have already started their calls for the Argentine to be sacked and get something out of this majorly disappointing season.
Amongst those criticisms, Merson’s harsh take extends beyond merely highlighting minor errors at the club. In his recent column for Sky Sports, the 55-year-old discussed the situation at Chelsea and how, as a fan, that disappoints him to the fullest.
He contends that the current Chelsea squad lacks balance, a situation that persists despite the high number of signings they have made in the last three transfer windows.
“I don’t know what the team will be on Wednesday night against Aston Villaâæyou just don’t know what the team will beâæ Mauricio Pochettino has too many options, but he hasn’t got too many good players,” Merson wrote in his column.
Chelsea made headlines with their two massive transfer deals for their midfielders Enzo Fernández and Moses Caicedo, both of whom have considerably disappointed Merson’s expectations this season.
“You have got two players in the middle of the park, Enzo Fernández and Moises Caicedo, that cost over £200m. For that price, they should be dictating the game,” Merson wrote.
Merson expects nothing special from Chelsea in the FA Cup fourth-round replay on Wednesday. He believes that the club is poised to face another bitter defeat at Villa Park, marking an end to their FA Cup hopes for this season.
“I don’t give Chelsea a chance on Wednesday night, not even a chance. That can’t be right. When was the last time I ever said that as a Chelsea fan? It was only a few years ago that the other team would have no chance against Chelsea. Everyone would be surprised if they won that game,” Merson wrote.
