R Ashwin is on the verge of a significant milestone in his Test career. The veteran is on the threshold of becoming the Indian bowler with most Test wickets at home.

The legendary Anil Kumble holds the record, having picked up 350 wickets from 63 matches with 25 five-wicket hauls and 7 10-wicket hauls to show for his efforts.

Ashwin is only 5 wickets away from making history of India. The 37-year-old spinner has 346 wickets to his name from 57 matches with 26 five-wicket hauls and 6 10-wicket hauls to his name.

Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan is on top of the tree with 493 wickets from 73 matches with 45 five-wicket hauls and 15 10-wicket hauls.

Ashwin has a chance to go past Kumble when India lock horns with England in the third Test of the 5-match series, starting February 15 at the SCA Stadium in Rajkot.

More milestones awaiting R Ashwin

Ashwin, in the meantime, is only 1 wicket short of picking up 500 wickets in Test cricket. The experienced campaigner is currently on 499 wickets from 97 Tests since his debut back in November 2011.

Ashwin also needs 3 wickets to become the first Indian to pick up 100 wickets in Tests against England, led by Ben Stokes. Only James Anderson has more than 100 scalps in Test matches between England and India.

In the ongoing Test series, Ashwin has taken 9 wickets from 4 innings at an average of 36.33 with his best figures of 3/68 in the first innings of the opening Test at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

Ashwin has also racked up 78 runs from 2 matches at an average of 19.50 with a top score of 29 to his name. Ashwin is expected to play a key role for India to win their ongoing Test series.
