18-year-old batting sensation Angkrish Raghuvanshi announced himself in the Indian Premier League by scoring a rapid fifty on his innings debut for Kolkata. The Under-19 star smashed a 27-ball 54 against Delhi to guide his side to a comfortable win at the ACA-VDCA Stadium in Vizag. His knock helped Kolkata post the second-highest total in IPL history, while overcoming Delhi by a massive margin of 106 runs. Raghuvanshi, who was roped in by Kolkata for his base price of Rs 20 lakh in the IPL 2024 mini-auction, became the seventh-youngest batter to score a fifty in the competition.

Raghuvanshi scored 54 runs off 27 deliveries, while smashing five boundaries and three sixes, while forming a game-changing 104-run partnership with Sunil Narine. The two batters smashed the DC bowling unit all over the park as KKR posted a mammoth 272 for 7 on the scoreboard in the first innings, before bowling Delhi out for 166 to clinch the match by 106 runs.

Raghuvanshi, at 18 years and 303 days, achieved the distinction of being the second-youngest player to hit a half-century for KKR in its franchise history. This milestone places him just short of ace India opener Shubman Gill’s record.

The young batter demonstrated his skill when he took just 25 balls to reach his maiden IPL fifty. This leaves him behind only James Hopes, who scored a 24-ball fifty on his debut in 2008, as the second-fastest to achieve the feat in an IPL debut innings.

He also registered the fourth-highest individual score by a KKR batter on his debut IPL innings, behind only Brendon McCullum (158* vs RCB in 2008), Manish Pandey (64 vs MI in 2014), and Owais Shaw (58* vs Deccan Chargers in 2010).

The young batter earned high praise from Shreyas Iyer following his half-century in Vizag, with the KKR captain calling Raghuvanshi a smart batter with a phenomenal work ethic.

“He was fearless from ball one. His work ethic is phenomenal. He analyses situations well. He is a smart batter, shots were pleasing to the eye,” said Iyer after the match.

Raghuvanshi stepped into the limelight with his performance in the 2022 Under-19 World Cup, where he accumulated a total of 278 runs in only 6 innings to finish as the leading run-scorer in the tournament.

Raghuvanshi, originally from Delhi, shifted to Mumbai at the tender age of 11. There, he began his professional cricket training under the mentorship of Abhishek Nayar and Omkar Salvi. This change in training and environment led to his eventual decision to permanently relocate to Mumbai.

His move was further justified when he made his debut in the List A and T20 events during the 2023-24 season for Mumbai. Raghuvanshi proved his mettle, showing an impressive performance in the CK Nayudu Trophy. He racked up an impressive 765 runs in just nine matches, hinting at the bright future that lies on the horizon for this young talent.

As the Kolkata Knight Riders continue their winning run in IPL 2024, it’ll be interesting to see how big a role can this young star play for the two-time IPL champions this season.
