IPL 2024, Royal Challengers Bengaluru vs Kolkata Knight Riders Highlights: Kolkata stretch their Chinnaswamy dominance

Kolkata won their highly-anticipated clash against Bengaluru in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 on March 29, by 7 wickets. A brilliant batting performance by Phil Salt, Sunil Narine, and Venkatesh Iyer handed Kolkata their sixth straight win at the M Chinnaswamy stadium, since their first one in 2016. Virat Kohli’s 83-run unbeaten knock went in vain as Kolkata gunned down the 183-run target in just the 17th over. The highly-anticipated clash between Bengaluru and Kolkata turned out to be a huge disappointment for the home crowd as Kolkata now became the first away team to record a victory in the IPL 2024 season. Kohli and Cameron Green’s superb knocks were not enough for Bengaluru as Kolkata bagged their second victory of the season on top of some brilliant batting prowess.

RCB vs KKR: HIGHLIGHTS

  • Shreyas Iyer won the toss for Kolkata and opted to bowl first against Bengaluru at the M Chinnawamy Stadium. A choice that ultimately paid off in their favour.
  • Kolkata’s bowlers repaid the captain’s faith as Harshit Rana (2/39) and Andre Russell (2/29) each picked two wickets.
  • The early dismissal of Faf du Plessis on 8(6), added considerable pressure on the home side from the very start. However, Virat Kohli assumed the big-hitting role after Faf du Plessis’s dismissal.

IPL 2024, RCB vs KKR: Highlights

  • Cameron Green’s second stint at No.3 proved to be much more effective for his side, as compared to the Punjab clash. Green scored 33 off 21 and also shared a crucial 65-run partnership alongside Kohli.
  • Virat Kohli showcased his usual controlled but explosive batting prowess with his unbeaten innings of 83(59). Kohli’s innings against Kolkata saw the batter clinch the Orange cap yet again this season.
  • After Green’s dismissal by Sunil Narine, Glenn Maxwell, finally found his touch in IPL 2024, and gave a much-needed boost to his side with his 28 (19) innings. However, none of the lower-order batters failed to stand their ground like the ones before.
  • Dinesh Karthik played a much-needed cameo at No.7, and helped his side in setting a 183-run target for Kolkata to chase.
  • Kolkata batted with some ease during the run-chase, especially due to the huge boost handed to the side by their opening pair of Sunil Narine and Phil Salt. The opening pair built an explosive 86-run partnership.
  • Even after losing their opening pair, Kolkata saw Venkatesh Iyer and captain Shreyas Iyer take over full charge of the run chase with their 50(30) and 39*(24) innings, respectively.
  • Kolkata ultimately won the match by 7 wickets, which now extends their head-to-head advantage over Bengaluru by 19-14 in their 33 clashes so far. With this win, Kolkata have now won 8 straight games at the M Chinnaswamy stadium, since 2016.
  • Sunil Narine, in his milestone 500th T20 game, received a further addition as he won the Player of the Match for his brilliant all-round performance.

WHAT THE CAPTAINS SAID

Speaking after their win, Kolkata Captain Shreyas Iyer reflected on how the gap before the Bengaluru clash helped the side while preparing. Shreyas also had praise for Andre Russell’s formidable performance.

“Coming here, getting those two sessions of practice, we were in a good shape from the previous game. Coming and hitting few balls, it felt comfortable from within. The way Russell came in and realised the wicket wasn’t giving much from bowlers, and went to slower ones, analysing the conditions on the spot was pleasing to the eye. The communication was brilliant,” Shreyas said.

Shreyas also reflected on Sunil Narine’s brilliance showcased against Bengaluru.

“See when Narine comes in to open, he knows he has one job which is to clear the infield. Today we were contemplating whether to start with him or not but he did a brilliant job,” Shreyas added.

Bengaluru captain Faf du Plessis refelcted on his side’s performance, and highlighted how they can improve further into the IPL 2024 season.

“Strange one, first innings we thought that the wicket was very two-paced, you could see that when the guys bowled the cutters, back of a length, the guys really struggled. We thought it was a decent score knowing that it gets a little bit easier…The way the two of them (Narine and Slat) were striking the ball, some really good batting there, they put pressure on our bowlers. They hit strong cricket shots and pretty much took the game away. With Narine there, you can’t really go to spin, you want to use pace up front,”

With this win, Kolkata moved up to the 2nd spot in the IPL 2024 points table, while Bengaluru remained in sixth.
