Delhi lost their second game in a row in the Indian Premier League on March 28, Thursday. DC, playing at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium in Jaipur fell short by 12 runs in their second group stage match against Rajasthan. Delhi failed to chase down 186 runs in the game, owing to some top bowling from the Rajasthan side. Asked if it was concerning to lose two games on a trot, Delhi bowling coach James Hopes said that he was not going to be too harsh on his players.

Speaking at the press conference after the conclusion of the game, the DC bowling coach spoke extensively about star pacer Anrich Nortje. Nortje looked undercooked on his comeback and was hit for 48 runs from his four overs. Nortje was slammed for 25 runs in his final over by Rajasthan youngster Riyan Parag who gave RR a fighting total to defend with his stellar 84* off just 45 balls.

Hopes said that Nortje had spent a lot of time away from the game and should not be judged based on only 4 overs.

“I won’t say too much bad about the bowlers. They tried their best, they tried to execute. It’s the first time that Anrich Nortje has been at this level in a while. He’s had a fair time out of the game. If you look at all the numbers, he’s one of the premier death bowlers in the game. So we assume that he’s going to keep getting better, and we trust that he will. And, yeah, we just let him get probably 20-30 too many in that last,” James Hopes said in the press conference after the match.

Nortje hasn’t played for South Africa since September 2023 as he was recovering from a stress fracture in his back due to which he missed the ODI World Cup, India’s tour to South Africa and also the SA20 league. He made his comeback in the Cricket South Africa T20 challenge and played 3 matches for Warriors.

2024 IPL Full Schedule

Hopes concluded by saying that there were specific parts of the game that DC wanted to work on and one of them was with their middle-overs batting.

“We need to tidy up what we do at the end of the game like it’s one game. I’m not going to judge us too harshly on one game. We need to tidy up our middle over batting to we. We tend to get stuck a little bit in phases there, and, we know the fix for that, and is Pant and he’s played two games after a long, long layoff, and I think you’re gonna see some pretty special things from him in the next few weeks,” James Hopes concluded on the matter.

DC will now play their home against against CSK in Vizag on March 31.
