Actors Shatrughan Sinha and Sunny Deol have many box office records to their credit, but as parliamentarians, this is one record they may not be proud of.
The two Hindi film superstars and Members of Parliament in the 17th Lok Sabha did not speak on the floor of the house even once, as per details shared by the Lok Sabha secretariat.
Sinha, a Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP, won the by-elections in 2022 and returned to the Lok Sabha in April that year, while Gurdaspur MP Sunny Deol served the full term.
“Sinha didn’t ask any question in the question hour. He didn’t participate in any discussion under rule 377 or any special motion. Deol also never spoke, but he did bring on record some written submissions in discussions,” a Lok Sabha official told CNN-News18.
The 17th Lok Sabha set a record of sorts, giving every first-time MP got a chance to speak. But nine MPs did not participate.
The list includes:
- Tamluk MP Divyevendu Adhikari
- Chikbalpaur’s B N Bache Gowda
- Pradhan Barua from Lakhimpur, Assam
- Uttar Kannada’s Anant Kumar Hegde
- Chamraj Nagar MP B Srinivas Prasad
- Bijapur’s Ramesh Jigajinagi
- BSP’s Ghosi MP Atul Roy
Atul Roy has been in jail throughout the tenure of this Lok Sabha. “He is facing trial on allegations of rape and cheating. Parole was granted to him a few times,” an official said.
The 17th Lok Sabha passed some key bills such as scrapping of triple talaq, abrogating Article 370 and Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam to introduce 33% reservation for women. The resolution on Ayodhya Ram temple was also passed on the last day. The overall productivity of the lower house was at 97%.
