Former Argentina midfielder and current Under-23 coach Javier Mascherano has said that the doors are open for eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi to represent his nation in the upcoming Paris Olympics.

Messi is currently plying his trade in the United States, captaining Inter Miami in Major League Soccer. He recently won the FIFA Best award and his record-extending eighth Ballon d’Or following his heroics in Aregntina’s 2022 FIFA World Cup triumph.

As quoted by Reuters, Mascherano said Messi has the invitation to represent Argentina in the 2024 Paris Olympics. Messi already has an Olympic gold to his name, winning the medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Well, everyone knows my relationship with Leo, the friendship I have with him. I have always said that a player like Leo has opened doors and the invitation to accompany us then will obviously depend on him, his compromises and his time, but the invitation will clearly be there,” said Mascherano.

According to the latest Olympic rules, three players over the age of 23 are allowed to represent their nations at the Olympics with the rest of the 18-member squad aged 23 or under.

Messi has made a remarkable impact at Inter Miami since joining the MLS club. In his debut season, he scored 11 goals and provided eight assists in just 14 appearances across all competitions. His performances helped Inter Miami clinch the 2023 Leagues Cup, marking the club’s first-ever piece of silverware.

Throughout his illustrious career, Messi has amassed 821 goals and 361 assists for club and country, with a record 474 goals in La Liga.

Messi’s trophy cabinet consists of 43 trophies, including ten La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions League crowns, seven Cope del Reys, eight Spanish Super Cups, three UEFA Super Cups, two Ligue 1 titles, three FIFA Club World Cups, one French Super Cup, one Leagues Cup, one Copa America and the 2022 FIFA World Cup to go with his 2008 Olympics gold.

Individually, he has been honoured with eight Ballon d’Or awards and three The Best FIFA Men’s Player awards. His legacy is further cemented by six European Golden Shoes and numerous scoring records.

The Paris Olympics will begin on July 26 and will go on till August 11.
