Kolkata captain Shreyas Iyer heaped praise on star all-rounder Andre Russell following their win over Bengaluru, saying his variations were spot-on. Russell was the pick of the Kolkata bowlers as they beat Bengaluru for 7 wickets at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Friday, March 29. With this win, Kolkata extended their winning start to IPL 2024, having defeated Hyderabad in their season opener. This result also took them up to second place in the IPL 2024 points table.

Speaking at the post-match presentation, Shreyas hails Russell’s impact with the ball, saying his variations were spot-on. Russell picked two wickets while giving away just 29 runs in his four overs against Bengaluru. His spell also helped him reach a landmark of 100 wickets for the Kolkata-based franchise in the IPL. He became just the second bowler after teammate Sunil Narine (183 wickets) to reach the 100-wicket mark for Kolkata.

“Russell showed slower ones are good here and the way he executed them were pleasing to see. He was spot on with his variations and slower balls. From there on, the rest of the bowlers picked up on that and made that their plans. The communication was brilliant,” said Shreyas.

Speaking about Kolkata’s use of Narine as an opening batter, Shreyas said the West Indian just had one job and that was to clear the boundary. Narine smashed 47 runs off 22 balls, while hitting two boundaries and five sixes against Bengaluru. He was adjudged the ‘Player of the Match’ for his all-round performance, having claimed the wicket of Glenn Maxwell in the first innings as well.

“See Narine when he comes in, he has one job that is to clear the outfield and get maximum runs. Today was a phenomenal example. We were contemplating today whether to open with him or not, but this was great,” Shreyas added.

Narine and Russell’s performance helped Kolkata register their sixth successive win at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Following their comfortable win over Bengaluru, Kolkata Knight Riders will turn their focus towards Delhi Capitals with the two sides set to lock horns at the ACA-VDCA Stadium in Vizag on Wednesday, April 3.
